Grime Stories No. 22: Navigating New Beginnings in the Art World

Writer's picture: Stuart JarvisStuart Jarvis

With the start of the new year, I'm reflecting on my journey as a professional artist and my pursuit of gallery representation.

Working with a gallery is often seen as a significant milestone for many artists. And while it’s not a path everyone chooses—thanks largely to the explosion of online sales through social media—its allure remains strong.

A physical gallery offers a different kind of legitimacy and reach, providing opportunities that digital platforms may not always replicate. However, it’s essential to approach this relationship with clear expectations.

The key is to collaborate with people who genuinely understand my artistic vision. Do they grasp what I’m aiming to express through my art? Are they equipped to connect my work with the right kind of collectors? This is crucial since gallery commissions can be steep, sometimes close to 50%. Therefore, it’s important not to be too quick in accepting an offer; make sure the gallery is as invested in your art as you are.

My latest muse

I've been enjoying pacing the streets of Digbeth recently and loving every moment of it. There's a palpable tension as the area undergoes gentrification, transforming into Birmingham's creative hub of innovation while striving to maintain its unique character. This evolving environment inspires me creatively, offering endless scenes to capture through art. The mix of old and new captivates me, with graffitied walls echoing its industrial past and connection to Peaky Blinders. (I'm still only on series 1!)

These gritty, sometimes hostile streets are perfect for my charcoal drawing. Watch this space for more to come.

Finally, In other exciting developments, I had the amazing opportunity to work with a major broadcaster in December. It’s a thrilling chapter that I can’t delve into just yet, but I promise to keep you updated (hopefully in February) on my exciting new TV appearance.
