Welcome & Thank You

A warm welcome to all new subscribers—and heartfelt thanks to those who’ve been following my work for a while. I really appreciate your continued interest and support. As always, I’ve included some free resources and recent updates from both my studio and time spent drawing on location.

Drawing in Digbeth

Earlier this month, I returned to Digbeth, Birmingham—an area I keep coming back to, both emotionally and artistically. This time, I was joined by Clare, a long-time student and friend, as we explored and responded to the changing cityscape through drawing.

We began in Birmingham’s newly redeveloped centre, reflecting on how the city has changed. As we walked towards Digbeth, we stepped into its industrial past—still visible in the soot-blackened brickwork, graffiti, and abandoned buildings. Despite its roughness, or perhaps because of it, the area holds a unique creative energy.

On Location: The Art Task

Clare set up under the large arch near the Custard Factory, now a focal point of Birmingham’s growing creative quarter. Her task was to build the composition with bold, structural lines before adding tone and mood using a generous amount of charcoal.

It was a powerful reminder of how drawing on location can reconnect us to a place—through memory, texture, and atmosphere.

What’s Next

The day was filmed, and I’ve now shared the footage with the director I’m working with on a new television series currently in development. It’s early days, so I can’t share too much yet—but I’m hopeful and excited about where it might lead.

I’ll keep you posted in future newsletters as things progress.

Stay Connected

Thanks again for being part of this journey. Whether you’re here for the art tips, the stories, or just the sense of place, I’m glad to have you with me.

And do not hesitate to get in touch if I can help you

Until next time,

Stuart
