Grime Stories 17: New Painting released

Writer's picture: Stuart JarvisStuart Jarvis

For those with a keen eye among my followers, you may have noticed a certain similarity between my latest large square oil painting and a previously showcased piece from the concrete towers of Spaghetti Junction. You'd be quite right. This new work is essentially a reimagining—a rehash—of an earlier painting, but with improvements.

I've been working hard to reimagine some of the techniques used in this painting, focusing on form, linearity, and approximations of shapes without being overly literal.

If this all sounds a bit too esoteric, I apologise. However, for some of you, including myself, I find it fascinating to delve into the artist's thought processes sometimes even more than the outcome itself. Understanding what artists aim to achieve in their work, how they manipulate the paint, and the priorities guiding them as they stand at the easel are a constant source of interest.

Every brushstroke and colour choice was an attempt to balance spontaneity with precision—capturing a fleeting moment of light whilst encased within the giant walls and columns of concrete.

Colour is a slightly alien world, and one that I'm prepared to admit is approached with no plan or favoured scheme, nor any theory-based colour wheel of complementary or contrasting colours. However, I do have a sense that things have worked out well here. Let me know what you think!

Thank you for being part of this journey and follow me here if you do not already -
